The term “cancer” is often used synonymously with the word “malignancy” and refers to a collection of diseases that occur when cells in the body multiply and may spread into other areas of the body. When cancer cells invade healthy parts of the body, they may disrupt the ability of those parts to function properly. Cancer can begin nearly anywhere in the body, and the different types of cancer are usually categorized either by where the cancer started to grow or by the cell type from which the cancer developed.
What Cancer Is Not
Although the word “cancer” is used to describe certain diseases wherein cells multiply, cancer is not as simple as unregulated cell division. For example, in benign tumors, cells multiply but are unable to spread to parts of the body beyond where the multiplying cells originated. These tumors are considered non-cancerous (non-malignant) and are often enclosed by the immune system to separate them from the rest of the body. Benign tumors are generally not serious unless they disrupt healthy body functioning, usually respond well to treatment, and rarely become cancerous (also referred to as “malignant”).
