Medical Oncology & Hematology
Richard Zuniga, MD is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist. Dr. Richard Zuniga practiced as an attending physician and then became the Medical Director of Clinical Research at Lowell General Cancer Center. Previously, he practiced at New York Methodist Hospital, where he received the Attending Teaching Excellence Award in 2015.
Before practicing medicine, Dr. Zuniga earned his Medical Degree at Universidad de San Martin de Porres in Peru. Dr. Zuniga completed his residency, and his first fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, where he also practiced as an Attending Physician.
He then completed two more fellowships; in hematology/oncology, and Drug Development Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Dr. Zuniga has been recognized for his fight against breast cancer, receiving the Breast Cancer Achievement Award from the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium in 2010. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Hematology, The European Society of Hematology, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology.
He has authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts, which have been featured in the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. He holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professorship at Mount Sinai.

"I saw Dr Zuniga the first time, after that it was nearly impossible to get an appt with him or speak to him on the phone. I had to stay on top of my iron levels myself despite him knowing I need sufficient iron to give birth. I had to advocate for myself even while my iron levels were declining after iron infusions, nurses would call and say oh blood work is perfect when levels are lower than last time. When I ask for an explanation how they’re perfect despite being lower after all the infusions, they would have nothing to say except someone will call you back and then eventually be scheduled for more infusions. Alsoooo every time I went to bloodwork they never actually had the right orders, so don’t plan on going here if you constantly have to remind them to do the correct bloodwork because the doc didn’t put orders in or if they constantly say everything is fine when it’s clearly not."
