Dr. Bustamante-Alvarez is a board-certified oncologist-hematologist with extensive expertise in molecular oncology and caring for patients with various types of malignancies. With a focus on thoracic oncology, including small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, Mesothelioma, and thymic malignancies, he uses a comprehensive approach that incorporates immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and diverse chemotherapy regimens to provide optimal treatment outcomes. Dr. Bustamante-Alvarez also specializes in managing benign and malignant blood disorders, with particular emphasis on thrombosis, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and autoimmune cytopenias.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Bustamante-Alvarez is actively engaged in groundbreaking research, concentrating on genomics and circulating tumor DNA. His work has been published in esteemed journals, encompassing review articles and original research in cell-free DNA in thoracic oncology. As a principal investigator and co-investigator, he leads and collaborates on several interventional clinical trials, focusing on small-cell lung cancer, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, and Mesothelioma within the field of thoracic oncology. Additionally, Dr. Bustamante contributes to research endeavors centered around biomarkers, exploring their potential impact on improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Bustamante-Alvarez received his Doctor of Medicine from the Central University of Venezuela and a Molecular Oncology Master’s in the Bioscience Studies Center and CNIO from the National Cancer Research Center in Madrid, Spain. He served as Chief Resident during his Internal Medicine Residency Program at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He completed a Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and James Cancer Center, where he also served as a Chief Fellow. Dr. Bustamante-Alvarez is an Assistant Professor at West Virginia University Cancer Institute and served as the West Virginia University Cancer Institute’s Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Research Unit.
