World Hemophilia Day: What is Hemophilia?

World Hemophilia Day, observed annually on April 17th, is a time to raise awareness about bleeding disorders and their impact on individuals. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing the different types of bleeding disorders, including hemophilia, which can have a significant impact on the lives of those affected and their loved ones.

Hemophilia is a rare disorder characterized by a deficiency in blood-clotting proteins, resulting in abnormal bleeding. It is crucial to understand the symptoms of hemophilia, which include excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries, large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling, blood in the urine or stool, nosebleeds without a known cause, and unusual bleeding after vaccinations.

While hemophilia is typically an inherited disorder, some individuals develop the condition without a family history, known as acquired hemophilia. Acquired hemophilia can be caused by various factors, including pregnancy, autoimmune conditions, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and drug reactions.

At New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, we provide support and assistance to individuals struggling with hemophilia or related symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of hemophilia, we encourage you to seek medical attention and discuss the right treatment plan with your doctor.
