Cancer Treatment and Your Heart Health

Ways to Help Support Your Heart Health

It may come as no surprise that February is coined National Heart Month. However, the reason isn't because of the popular holiday celebrated during these short weeks; it's to bring awareness and education about the most important organ in the human body that often goes overlooked: the heart.

While all need to keep their heart health top-of-mind, it's even more vital for those who have undergone cancer treatment; radiation and chemotherapy can impact the heart. The New York Cancer & Blood Specialists team is here to share some helpful tips on caring for the center of your circulatory system properly.

Exercise Regularly

One of the best ways to keep your heart in tip-top shape is to exercise regularly. Whether it's a brisk walk, a few laps in the pool, or lifting light weights, you should strive to stay active for at least 150 minutes each week. However, before committing to a daily exercise regimen or signing up for a fitness class with a friend, it's imperative to obtain a physical examination from your primary care doctor, as well as consult with your oncologist, to determine the safest level and form of exercise that's right for you.

Eat Healthily

In addition to working out, it's important to make a conscious effort to follow a heart-healthy diet. Consider eating foods such as colorful vegetables and fruits (e.g., bell peppers, apples, broccoli, etc.), as well as foods that are high-fiber (e.g., beans, whole grains, avocados, etc.) and low-fat (e.g., low-fat cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.). Of course, before you make any changes to your diet, you must consult with your cancer care team to review the foods you can consume versus those you should avoid or eat within moderation.

Reduce Stress

There's no doubt that life can be stressful for many reasons. And if you're faced with ongoing stressors, there's a chance it can lead to high blood pressure, amongst other heart-related conditions over time. So although you can't completely banish all stress from your day-to-day life, you must make it your mission to find ways to diminish the hold it has on you.

Some of the most helpful ways to manage stress include connecting with loved ones, meditating in a quiet space, limiting your electronic device usage, listening to your favorite music, and so much more. Not only will stress management help aid your health, but it will also help you feel more productive and, of course, happier.
